Number Operation

:

Integer Composition

Use place-value understandings to round whole numbers to the nearest 10.

Supporting targets:
1:

Determine whether to round up or down to get to the nearest ten.

2:

Understand that the ones’ place is the key digit to evaluate to determine whether to round up or down.

3:

Identify which digits in the ones’ place signal to round up to the nearest ten.

4:

Identify which digits in the ones’ place signal to round down to the nearest ten.

5:

Grade:

2nd

Vocabulary:

Rounding, Nearest, Closest, Tens & Ones Place

Activities:

  • Students colored in the tens from 50-100 (50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100) on their number line to make them easily identifiable. We reviewed how to round numbers to the nearest tens. Students located numbers (between 50-100) on their number line and determine which ten it was closest to.
  • Students continued to round numbers for independent practice. They completed the prompt ~ "___ is between ___ and ___. ___ is closer to ___. When I round ___ to the nearest ten, the answer is ___." (ex. 56 is between 50 and 60. 56 is closer to 60. When I round 56 to the nearest ten, the answer is 60.) Students also completed a number line to show the 2 tens that the number is in between, the position of the number, and circled the tens that it's closest to.
  • Students looked at their 0-100 number line to determine which digits indicate to round up and which digits indicate to round down. Students were cued to look at the numbers that were colored while we practiced rounding numbers to the nearest ten. Students are developing an understanding that when the ones place is 1, 2, 3, or 4, you round down, and when the ones place is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, you round up.

*We will continue to develop their understanding of looking at the digit in the ones place to round numbers to the nearest ten.
