Target 1

Lesson Type:

New

Number Operation

:

Computation

Solve multi-step addition and subtraction problems within 50.

Supporting targets:
1:

Solve problems that have more than one operation, addition and subtraction.

2:

Understand when solving a problem that has both addition and subtraction operations that solving starts on the left and continues to the right.

3:

4:

5:

Grade:

2nd

Vocabulary:

Addition, Subtracting, "Add on", "Take away"

Activities:

  • Students picked 3 cards to make equations involving addition and subtraction. Students solved the equations from left to right. We used the pictures on the cards and counters to help with "counting on" and "taking away." Students applied what we practiced in their workbooks.

Geometry
Symmetry
Understand that a figure does not change in a symmetrical reflection, the only change is positional.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Relate a reflection to a mirror.

2:

Relate a reflection to a fold line, where an image will leave its impression on the other side, and that impression will be backwards (the fold line will create an image that has matching parts).

3:

Identify the reflection of a given image.

4:

5:

Grade:

2nd

Vocabulary:

Symmetry, Reflection, Line of Symmetry

Activities:

  • We looked at a "mirror" (camera screen) to talk about what we see - a reflection. We also talked about the reflection we see when we look at the whiteboard. The image is the same.
  • We looked at some shapes and images made with pattern blocks to explore how they are the same on both sides of the fold line (line of symmetry).
  • We used pattern blocks to make a design with symmetry. Students found the fold line (line of symmetry). Then students cut-and-paste paper pattern blocks to make a fish with a fold line.
