Vocabulary:

Rounding, Nearest/Closest to

Activities:

We continued rounding. First we identified the multiples of 10 (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, etc.). Then students were given a number line (0-50), and they colored the multiples of 10 to make them easy to identify. Next, students practiced rounding.

  1. Students were told a number.
  2. Students found the number on the number line. (ex. 24)
  3. Students identified the 2 nearest tens on the number line. (ex. 20 & 30)
  4. Students determined the ten that it's closest/nearest to. (ex. 24 is closest to 20 because it's 4 jumps away)
  5. Students colored the number the same color as the ten that it was nearest/closest to. (ex. color 24 the same color as 20)

We talked about numbers in the middle (ex. 25), which tells us to round up.

*Next week, the colors will help us to explore which digit tells us to round up or down, as well as, which numbers round up and which numbers round down.
