Techniques and Formulas

Solve problems involving area.

###### 1:

Find the area of triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms.

###### 2:

Use previous area understandings (of rectangular figures) to gain insight into the area of new geometric shapes.

###### 3:

Determine the algebraic equations for calculating the area of a triangle (½ base * height), a trapezoid (½ height * (base1 + base2)), and a parallelogram (base * height).

###### 4:

Calculate the area of a shaded region of a figure.

6th

###### Vocabulary:

Area, Base, Height

Activities:

-Students reviewed finding the area of a triangle by using the area formula for the triangle.

-Students began to find the area of a trapezoid by figuring out that in a trapeziod there were two traingles. They drew a line through a trapezoid where it was split into two triangles. Then they used their knowledge of finding a triangle to find the area of a trapezoid.

-They discovered the two triangles have the same height in common but have different bases. The formula for a trapezoid is (base1 + base2)height/2.

-Students were given trapezoids and used the measurements and the formula to find the area.

-Students were also given a figure with shaded triangles and a trapziod. They used the area formulas for triangles and trapezoids to the total shaded area.

### Target 2

:

###### 1:

Add two or more decimals.

###### 2:

Identify the steps necessary to avoid making easy computational errors when adding decimal numbers.

###### 3:

When calculating, align the decimal points in each number, then add hundredths, tenths, ones, and tens.

###### 4:

Apply regrouping strategies wherever necessary when adding decimal numbers.

###### 5:

Add zeros to the right side of a number wherever necessary to align the decimal place-value of each number.

4th

###### Vocabulary:

Decimal point, Place Value

Activities:

-Students were given addition problems with decimal numbers and learned how to write the equation vertically by aligning the two decimals.

-Students understood to use regrouping strategies when necessary.
