Ms. Kylie

Target 1

Lesson Type:

Continuation

Measurment

:

Techniques and Formulas

Solve problems involving area.

Supporting targets:
1:

Find the area of triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms.

2:

Use previous area understandings (of rectangular figures) to gain insight into the area of new geometric shapes.

3:

Determine the algebraic equations for calculating the area of a triangle (½ base * height), a trapezoid (½ height * (base1 + base2)), and a parallelogram (base * height).

4:

Calculate the area of a shaded region of a figure.

5:

Grade:

6th

Vocabulary:

Area, Base, Height

Activities:

-Students reviewed finding the area of triangles and trapezoids

-Each student was given a different parallelogram. They cut a piece of the parallelogram off to form a rectangle. Using their knowledge of finding the area of a rectangle students created a formula for a parallelogram.

-Students practiced finding the area of parallelograms using the formula

-Students calculated the area of the shaded shapes in an abstract figure.

Target 2

Lesson Type:
Continuation
Number Operation
Computation
Add decimal numbers.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Add two or more decimals.

2:

Identify the steps necessary to avoid making easy computational errors when adding decimal numbers.

3:

When calculating, align the decimal points in each number, then add hundredths, tenths, ones, and tens.

4:

Apply regrouping strategies wherever necessary when adding decimal numbers.

5:

Add zeros to the right side of a number wherever necessary to align the decimal place-value of each number.

Grade:

4th

Vocabulary:

Decimal point, Place Value

Activities:

-Students reviewed adding decimal numbers. They were given addition problems with decimal numbers and practiced writing the equation vertically by aligning the two decimals.

-Students understood to use regrouping strategies when necessary and adding zeros to the right side of a number to align the decimal place-value of each number

Fractional Numbers
Identify the difference between terminating and repeating decimals.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Explain that the decimal format of a fractional number terminates in a zero or eventually repeats.

2:

Read and use standard decimal notation.

3:

4:

5:

Grade:

5th

Vocabulary:

Terminating Decimal, Repeating Decimal

Activities:

-Students learned to identify the difference between terminating and repeating decimals.

-Students sorted terminating and repeating decimals.
