Techniques and Formulas

Solve problems involving area.

###### 1:

Find the area of triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms.

###### 2:

Use previous area understandings (of rectangular figures) to gain insight into the area of new geometric shapes.

###### 3:

Determine the algebraic equations for calculating the area of a triangle (½ base * height), a trapezoid (½ height * (base1 + base2)), and a parallelogram (base * height).

###### Vocabulary:

Area, Base, Height

Activities:

-Students cut out a 4 x 4 inch square and found the area of the square using the formula L x W. Then students folded the square in half to form a triangle. They used the information of the area of the square to find the area of the folded triangle.

-Using the information they knew about the area of the folded triangle they created the formula BxH/2.

-Students used geoboards to further their practice on finding the area of triangles. They created a rectangle/square using the rubberbands and then created a triangle inside. They first found the area of the rectangle/square and then found the area of the triangle.

-Students played a game of war by finding the area of triangles. ### Home Exploration
