### Target 1

###### Lesson Type:

New

Number Operation

:

Computation

Express powers of ten, using exponents.

###### Supporting targets:

###### 1:

Understand that when multiplying a whole number by a power of ten, the product will have an increased number of zeros, that has a direct relationship to the exponent.

###### 2:

###### 3:

###### 4:

###### 5:

###### Grade:

5th

###### Vocabulary:

Power of 10, Standard form, Expanded form, Place value

Activities:

- Students learned that multiplying powers of 10 will increase the number by adding zeros at the end to move the digit over to the left to make it the correct place value.
- Students solved expressions of multiplying a whole number by a power of 10. Then they created their own expressions and exchanged to solved each other's expressions.

###### Symmetry

###### Create symmetrical figures (using understandings that a figure does not change in a symmetrical transformation).

:

###### Supporting targets:

###### 1:

Define rotational symmetry.

###### 2:

Understand that an object has rotational symmetry if there is a center point around which the object is turned less than 360 degrees and the object looks the same.

###### 3:

Define order of rotation.

###### 4:

Identify the order of symmetry of a 2D shape.

###### 5:

Understand order as the number of times that an object will match (have symmetry) as it is rotated 360 degrees.

###### Grade:

5th

###### Vocabulary:

Rotational symmetry, 90 degree turn, 180 degree turn, 360 degree turn

Activities:

1. Students were given several 2D shapes to find if they have rotational symmetry. They defined the center point to rotate the shapes to the right. When rotating the shapes they looked to see if at any point the shape appears exactly like it did before rotating before reaching a rotation of 360 degrees.
