Geometry

:

Shape

Combine simple geometric shapes to create composite shapes.

Supporting targets:
1:

Compose larger shapes from smaller shapes (two small triangles can make a rectangle).

Vocabulary:

Shape, Square, Trapezoid, Triangle, Rhombus, Hexagon,

Activities:

1. Students used pattern blocks to create bigger shapes. Students used a combination of different shapes (squares, triangles, trapezoids, rhombuses) to fill in a bigger shape. At first, students were asked to fill the bigger shape with one type of pattern block to get starte. Students then used a combination of pattern block shapes to fill in the shapes.
Students filpped, rotated, and slid the pattern blocks around to try different ways for the shapes to fit. Students identified individual shapes when there was open spaces.

Activities:

1. Students were given a bowl full of a variety of farm animals of different colors. Students, first, sorted the animals by type by lining them up side by side, creating a sort of bar graph. Students were asked how much of each animal they had and determined who had the most and least of each animal. Students then sorted the farm animals by color in rows. They were again asked who had the most and least of each color.
