### Target 1

###### Lesson Type:

New

Number Operation

:

Fractional Numbers

Identity, compare, and manipulate different types of fractions.

###### 1:

Understand that fractions with different numerators and denominators can represent the same size.

###### 2:

Simplify a fraction to its lowest terms.

###### 3:

Use understandings of factors to simplify fractions.

4th

###### Vocabulary:

Fraction, Simplest Form, Lowest Terms, Factors, Simplify, Denominator, Numerator, Equivalent, Fraction Bar

Activities:

1. First starting activity was to use fraction bar manipulative pieces to create equivalent fractions.

2. Next, students solved equivalent fractions given either a numerator or denominator. They needed to remember to multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of the fraction by the same number.

3. After using manipulatives to show a varitey of equivalent fractions, students worked on simplifying fractions. They were aware that they needed to use division strategies to bring it down to lowest terms. Students needed to use their understanding of factors to help bring a variety of fractions to lowest terms.

4. Students used their whiteboards to help them solve each fraction. They needed to show their thinking and what they did to bring it down to lowest terms.

5. Last activity was called, "Color by Fraction." Students needed to solve each fraction and find what it would be in simplest form. Then, color all the fractions that are equivalent the same color. ### Home Exploration
