###### Level 4

## Ms. Caitlyn

### Target 1

###### Lesson Type:

Continuation

Number Operation

:

Computation

Multiply within 1,000.

###### Supporting targets:

###### 1:

Understand there are many ways to multiply multi-digit numbers.

###### 2:

Explain how different methods produce the same product (how each method is doing the same thing).

###### 3:

Understand the role of place-value in multiplication strategies.

###### 4:

Use the standard algorithm for solving multi-digit multiplication equations.

###### 5:

###### Grade:

5th

###### Vocabulary:

Lattice Method, Standard Algorithm, Multiples, Factors, Product

Activities:

Students compared the Lattice Method of Multiplication to the Box Method and the Standard Algorithm.

Students threw a bean bag at a set of problems at the board, and whichever the bean bag hit was the problem they had to solve. They also rolled a dice with the names of each multiplication method on it to see which form they should use in order to solve it.

Students computed multiplication problems up to 4-by-3-digits (i.e.: 5034 x 352).

###### Number Operation

###### Computation

###### Divide within 1,000.

:

###### Supporting targets:

###### 1:

Understand the role of place-value in division strategies.

###### 2:

Use the standard algorithm for solving multi-digit division equations.

###### 3:

Understand that there can be a remainder in a division problem.

###### 4:

###### 5:

###### Grade:

5th

###### Vocabulary:

Dividend, Divisor, Quotient, Remainder

Activities:

Students continued to do the previous activity (problems were mixed between multiplication and division).

Students computed long division problems with dividends up to 6-digits, and with divisors up to 2-digits (i.e.: 144032 divided by 12).
