Ms. Briana

Target 1

Lesson Type:

Continuation

Number Operation

:

Computation

Estimate a given quantity based on place-value understandings.

Supporting targets:
1:

Develop a strategy for estimating quantities (i.e., developing a unit of measurement for estimating – if this is what 10 units looks like this must be close to 40 units).

2:

Make strategy adjustment based on the results of initial estimations.

3:

Understand the value of using a point of reference when estimating quantity.

4:

Understand that rounding and estimation are a way to quickly check the accuracy of computations.

5:

Understand that you can use estimation when an exact answer is not needed.

Grade:

2nd

Vocabulary:

Quantity, Place Value, Computation, Accuracy, Estimation, Rounding and Strategy

Activities:

Students were given prefilled clear containers for them to estimate the contents of.

Students practiced rounding thier guesses to the nearest 10 and 100.

Students divided up suppies for each other without counting, they had to rely in a visual reference.

Target 2

Lesson Type:
Review
Measurment
Techniques and Formulas
Find the perimeter of a given shape.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Understand that perimeter can be found by adding the lengths of the sides of a figure.

2:

See a link between finding the perimeter of rectangles and multiplication.

3:

4:

5:

Grade:

3rd

Vocabulary:

Length, Measurement and Perimeter

Activities:

Students used connecting blocks or unifix cubes to create rectangles of varying sizes.

Students calculated the perimeter of their own rectangles then calculated the perimeter of their peers rectangles.

Students were then shown how to use multiplication as a methos rather than continuous adding.

Students practiced the multiplication method on the large white board with teacher created rectangles.

Target 3

Lesson Type:
Continuation
Measurment
Techniques and Formulas
Measure area by counting full and half-unit squares.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Relate area to arithmetic operations (multiplication and addition).

2:

Recognize area as a measurement of 2D shapes.

3:

Estimate area of given figures and then measure to compare the estimation to the actual measurement.

4:

5:

Grade:

2nd

Vocabulary:

Estimation, Measurment and Area

Activities:

Students reviewed what area is and how to calculate in with 2D figures.

Students used Connecting cubes or unifix cubes to create figures.

Students alternated figures and recorded square unit estimations.

Students then calculated the square units of figures and compared responses.
