Ms. AJ

Target 1

Lesson Type:

Continuation

Geometry

:

Coordinates

Use coordinates to find a location on a grid.

Supporting targets:
1:

Identify the x- and y-axis on a coordinate plane.

2:

Become familiar with quadrant I of the coordinate plane and that all coordinate pairs will have positive numbers in this quadrant.

3:

Become familiar with quadrant II of the coordinate plane and that the first number can be either positive or negative.

4:

Understand that the first number in a coordinate pair indicates placement on the x-axis and the second indicates placement on the y-axis.

5:

Graph points in the first and second quadrant of the coordinate plane.

Grade:

5th

Vocabulary:

Coordinates, Coordinate Pairs, X-Axis, Y-Axis, Quadrant I, Quadrant II, Plot, Intersection, Origin (0)

Activities:

Students learned what coordinate grids look like, how to label them, and find the "x-axis" and the "y-axis".

Students learned that plotting coordinates on the grid happened at the "intersection" between numbers on the x and y axes.

Students plotted given coordinates on the coordinate grid and learned how to write coordinate pairs (x,y). An example given was that the x-axis was similar to a "building" (indepedent and the y-axis was like the "floor" or "story" of the building.

Students learned about different quadrants of the coordinate grid, focusing on the first two. Students lesrned how negative numbers are used and set up on the x-axis.

Students played "battleship" to practice finding different coordinates.
