Target 1

Lesson Type:

Continuation

Number Operation

:

Computation

Combine given quantities by using counting strategies.

Supporting targets:
1:

Understand that combining numbers creates a larger quantity.

2:

Count on from a given number to add another quantity.

3:

Represent “putting together” with objects, fingers, drawings, etc.

4:

5:

Grade:

Kindergarden

Vocabulary:

Add, How Many More, Count Up, Altogether

Activities:

Students played "Toss the Ball Addition" in which they tossed around a ball with addition equations stuck all over with post-it notes. They kept tossing it around as the music plays, and stopped when the music was paused. The student with the stopped ball checked which addition problem their right thumb landed on and found the sum, taking popsicle sticks from the center to show the addition model for their problem. This continued until the song finished, then the students counted up how many popsicle sticks they collected altogether.

Played a class game of "Addition War", in which each student draws two cards from a center deck (cards include numbers from 1/ace to 10). The person with the highest sum between all of the cards won everyone's cards in the round. If two or more student's sums were the same, they drew two cards again and repeated until there was winner, who got all of the cards. Students used the number of symbols on their cards to count and figure out the sums.

Target 2

Lesson Type:
Continuation
Measurment
Comparison
Visually distinguish between items based on measurable criteria.

:

Supporting targets:
1:

Compare objects by size, length, weight, and capacity.

2:

Use a given reference unit to compare the length of objects.

3:

Understand that the more units an object has the longer it is.

4:

Use basic reasoning (and understandings of objects in real-life) to compare objects is terms of weight.

5:

Grade:

1st

Vocabulary:

Larger, Smaller, Longer, Shorter

Activities:

Students measured various objects around the classroom using blocks of varying sizes.

Students identified which blocks needed less to measure different objects.
