Understand that when subtracting a multi-digit number, each place-value is being subtracted individually to create the new number (ones are subtracted from ones, tens are subtracted from tens, etc.)

Understand how to regroup based on place-value understandings (i.e., ten ones can be composed into one ten – ten tens can be composed into one hundred).

The students added and subtracted within the context of money, under 20 dollars. They would add items "bought" to determine total cost, and then subtract from the customers total and make change. They used regrouping when necessary across the equations, and we then practiced making correct change.

Activities:

The students solved tangram puzzles by first matching pieces to same size figures, and then creating figures from smaller models.

Activities:
